Projects ranged from highly conceptual to commercial. Briefs consisted of initial research, 2D / 3D design, experimental pattern cutting, surface manipulation, visual communication, product manufacturing, tech packs, and promotion via the planning and achievement of frequent, stylised photoshoots.
Sustainability
The more I delved into the world of Fashion, the more I became aware of the negative effects the industry is having, and it became important to consider this when designing. The most efficient approach was sourcing fabrics through more ethical companies that offered organic options and natural fibres, and finding the occasional vintage piece of hardware for my garments. I think this is the biggest challenge of my work and for the industry, but one that can lead to even more creative outcomes and solutions, whilst doing better for our planet.
My Process
A keen interest in pattern cutting led to a unique approach of pattern development from unusual objects such as lampshades, chairs and boxes. Working with their fabric forms, the objects can be draped into elements of a garment, and then added into a paper pattern to create something new. I really enjoy technical drawing and so 2D design was often achieved by combining techs of retro garments with digital translations from my research. Translation techs also informed my print designs; working with quirky shapes and bright colours to develop pattern repeats, both digitally and by hand.
